AYSO uses birth year registration in order to align with other  American youth soccer program providers interpretation of the U.S. Soccer Player Development Initiatives.

Age determination shall be determined by the player's age on December 31st of the Membership Year (MY).  i.e. for MY 2023 the child will be placed in the division based on their age on December 31, 2023. 

How does it really work? 

When registering for Membership Year (MY) 2023, for a player that is presently 9 but turns 10 at any time in 2023 will be in the 12U division.  If a player is presently 12, but turns 12 during the fall of 2023, he or she will be in 14U, unless a program has a 13U division.
